Figurative Language

As a Romantic author, Fitzgerald uses amazing imagery, similes, metaphors, etc. Post a comment that leaves a direct quote from the novel that you liked. Tell us what type of figurative language the quote is and what the quote is saying.

What to look for:

* descriptive imagery
* metaphors
* similes
* personification
* epigram

This is required for every chapter we read.

  1. "Reserving judgments is a matter of eternal hope" (Fitzgerald 6). Epigram. Describes the internal hope that Nick carries - he always seeks to find the best in people before judging them.

    Saying that women don't have any intelligence, they are only fools with good looks, ( very untrue)

    1. I believe that Daisy hopes her daughter will be a fool because ignorance is bliss. Being a beautiful fool would mean that every man would want her, which is a disire of Daisy's. She also wouldn’t have to feel the pain of realizing and being able to comprehend the evil and corruption that society falls into.

  5. Involuntarily I glanced seaward-and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far way, that might have been the end of a dock (Fitzgerald 21). I think this is symbolizing Mr. Gatsby's hopes and dreams or what he is looking forward to in the future.

  7. "They are not perfect ovals-like the egg in the Columbus story, they are both crushed flat at the contact end...." (Fitzgerald 5). Simile. He is comparing the shape of the island to that of an egg.

Describes that you should not critize becuase that person may not be as fortunate as you so you should critize. Just be thankful that you had advantages in your life.

"And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as the things grow in fast movies, I had the familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer."(Fitzgerald 4) This could be symbolism and/or descriptive imagery. He is talking about just like how trees get new leaves or the sun shining he had the feeling that his life was starting again with the summer.

  14. "The only completely stationary object in the room was an enormous couch on which two young women were buoyed up as though upon an anchored balloon." (Fitzgerald 8)
    This quote uses a simile to compare the women to balloons due to the wind flowing through the room and appearing to lift them up.

    "Her face was sad and lovely with bright things in it, bright elyes and a bright pasionate mouth..." (Fitzgerald9)
    He is describing his cousin as an unforgettable person.

    She is saying that now she has found what she can do to not feel lonely anymore.

What this is saying is that when you feel like judging or putting someone down because they do not have the things you do. Remember everyone didn't get the chances you've had
